Softball Excellence DUGOUT

What People are Saying:
"If you coach softball you should take advantage of the knowledge Cindy Bristow is offering through Softball Excellence. I have been involved in fast pitch softball for more than 35 years as a player and coach, and she is the most knowledgeable coach I have worked with. Cindy's basic approach to teaching sound fundamentals, without a bunch of gimmicks, will greatly assist in the preparation of your players to compete physically and mentally. The material she produces is direct, to the point, and easy to absorb."

"There is a ton of information out there, but I couldn't really tell what was good and what was just selling. Someone recommended softball excellence as a sight for information. I checked it out and have done all the eclinics and bought several hard back books and drills. You are very good at explaining this wonderful sport. You put it all in common sense terms and use video and pictures very well. - Thanks again!"
- Dee Swartz
Fastpitch Softball mom/coach

"I just wanted to write and thank you for the outstanding clinic last weekend. Ive attended many coaching clinics with the likes of Bob Knight, Coach K., Rick Pitino, Doug Collins, Larry Brown, and I have to say that your thoughts and philosophies were every bit as insightful, valuable, and entertaining as were these coaching legends. Thank you also for all that you do and have done for the great game of fastpitch softball and our athletes."

1st Base Slow to 1st on Bunts?

By: Cindy Bristow

How to cover bunts if you have a good hitting player at 1st that isn't very quick

Are you having trouble getting your 1st baseman up close in bunt situations only to have her be too late getting back to 1st to cover the throw to the base? It's a problem that many teams face with all the lefthanded slappers in the game now posing such a baserunning threat. Speed has really become a major offensive weapon in softball and the infield position that has struggled the most adjusting to all this speed has been 1st base.

So, what can you do if you have a good hitting player at 1st that isn't very quick? How can you play her at 1st and still make sure that bunts are covered? The following bunt defense is just one of many that I cover in detail in our eClinic - Essential Bunt Defenses.

The answer is to play what's referred to as a 1-Back Bunt Defense. This basically means that instead of bringing both your 3rd baseman and your 1st baseman in for the bunt, your 3rd baseman and your pitcher are in for the bunt, and your 1st baseman is BACK near the bag. This allows her to focus on handling all throws to 1st base, but it does require your pitcher to cover bunts in front of her as well as over on the 1st base side.

While this defensive set might not work for your team if you don't have a good fielding pitcher, it is a great option for those of you that do. Take a look at how this coverage sets up and what's required of the infielders. You'll also notice that with any defensive coverage, there are strengths and weaknesses to it:
