Softball Excellence DUGOUT

What People are Saying:
"If you coach softball you should take advantage of the knowledge Cindy Bristow is offering through Softball Excellence. I have been involved in fast pitch softball for more than 35 years as a player and coach, and she is the most knowledgeable coach I have worked with. Cindy's basic approach to teaching sound fundamentals, without a bunch of gimmicks, will greatly assist in the preparation of your players to compete physically and mentally. The material she produces is direct, to the point, and easy to absorb."

"There is a ton of information out there, but I couldn't really tell what was good and what was just selling. Someone recommended softball excellence as a sight for information. I checked it out and have done all the eclinics and bought several hard back books and drills. You are very good at explaining this wonderful sport. You put it all in common sense terms and use video and pictures very well. - Thanks again!"
- Dee Swartz
Fastpitch Softball mom/coach

"I just wanted to write and thank you for the outstanding clinic last weekend. Ive attended many coaching clinics with the likes of Bob Knight, Coach K., Rick Pitino, Doug Collins, Larry Brown, and I have to say that your thoughts and philosophies were every bit as insightful, valuable, and entertaining as were these coaching legends. Thank you also for all that you do and have done for the great game of fastpitch softball and our athletes."

Backhanded Compliment

By: Cindy Bristow

Find out a great practice routine that will greatly improve all of your infielders' backhands.

Fastpitch Softball Infield Fielding Glove Backhand Drill

If your infielders run around their backhands because they just aren't very good at it, and you're not too sure just where to begin fixing them, then here's a daily practice routine that should really help you a lot!

Start the following practice routine with your infielders at every single practice. It only takes about 10 minutes and is DEFINITELY time well spent. I call them "everyday's" since that's how often your players will do them and this concept of a core set of fundamental skills that are important enough to be done every single practice helps your players have a routine that can be done quickly while building critical skills.

To create your everydays, have your players split up into pairs, each with their gloves on and one ball per pair. They'll do the glovework and quantities listed below from the following distances. Start out about 3 feet apart, then move back to 6 feet and then about 12 feet apart with balls rolled slightly faster. Each partner takes turns rolling and fielding before moving back to the next distance.

For the backhand have each infielder do the following:

  • 20 backhands
  • 10 shorthops
  • 10 forehands

Make sure the following backhand fundamentals are worked on:

  • bending the back knee to lower the glove (& not bending at the waist)
  • opening the palm to the ball and not to the ground
  • giving at, or going from the elbow and not from the shoulder
  • moving through the catch instead of pulling back

Since these "everyday's" are for glovework improvement no throws are necessary.
