Increase Pitch Movement Through Knowledge & Competition

Do your pitchers practice their spins and snaps all the time only to have flat pitches that get hit more than they should? If this sounds all too familiar then discover something that will really change your pitchers focus, and ultimately their pitches!

Too many pitchers have no idea what makes pitches move. Oh sure, they’ll all answer “spin” if you ask them that question, but all pitches spin and not all pitches move. How can that be? Learn the 2 keys to making pitches move and more importantly how to help your pitchers are actually get better.

Pop quiz – what 2 things must exist to make a pitch move? (Hint – both must exist). Give up? If you just asked this question to your pitchers chances are they gave you these 2 answers: spin and snap. In fact try it. When you get a chance ask your pitchers that exact question – “what 2 things are required in order to make a pitch move?” and see what they say. It will tell you a great deal about why their pitches either do or don’t move much.

For any pitch to move the following 2 principles must be present:

  1. Balls move in the direction they spin
  2. Balls move as fast as their spin

To help better understand these 2 principles let’s look at them both in regards to a Drop.

Balls Move in the Direction they Spin – this means for a ball to drop the ball must spin in the direction of the drop, or in other words it must spin toward the hitter with the top moving away from the pitcher and toward the catcher. No matter what signal the catcher gives, or what grip the pitcher uses, or what pitch the pitcher actually meant to throw, if the pitcher gets top to bottom spin (and #2 is also present) then the ball will drop.

Balls Move as Fast as Their Spin – this one’s really important as it’s what sets fastballs and dropballs apart. Let’s say your pitcher has finally gotten the proper spin for the dropball but the ball doesn’t drop. How come? A better question to ask is this – if “spin” was the only thing that made pitches move then how come a dropball and a fastball spin in exactly the same direction but they don’t move in the same way? The answer is the speed of that spin. Fastballs and dropballs do spin in the same direction – no matter what type of drop you throw (peel or rollover) they both spin in the same direction as a fastball. But, when you throw a fastball your focus is on speed of the pitch so you don’t worry about speed of spin. But, when you throw a drop your focus changes and you start to work more on the spin speed – and that’s why both pitches spin the same but move differently – they don’t spin at the same speed. The dropball spins faster than the fastball so it moves more (at least in theory).

So when your pitchers are working on improving their various pitches they should be focusing on making sure the ball is spinning in the correct direction (which is the direction you want the pitch to move) and also making sure they are getting this spin to be as fast as possible. Why does Cat Osterman have such amazing movement on her pitches? Because she gets such amazing spin speed. She focuses on the speed of her spin at release and not on the speed of her pitches.

OK, so once your pitchers know this and start working harder on improving both of these principles with each of their pitches, it’s still hard to know if they are making progress. Sometimes pitchers will be improving their spin speed but the ball still isn’t really breaking yet because the speed hasn’t gotten fast enough to change the path of the ball. And yet they are making progress. This is the hard part about pitching practice.

Most advanced pitchers (for this article we’ll call advanced pitchers any pitcher that throws different pitches) know there are 3 things they are trying to do on every single pitch:

  1. Throw it hard by the speed of their hand through the release point.
  2. Create a correct spin direction by the position of their hand entering and exiting the release.
  3. Create the speed of the spin by the strength and explosiveness of their twist at and through the release.

While they might all know they should do these 3 things most pitchers are simply gripping the ball a certain way and then throwing the crap out of it – and that’s their effort to make a ball move (which is why most balls don’t really move like they should).

This results from pitchers being obsession with speed – they’re always trying to throw the ball faster. And also from there being a way to measure speed. The radar gun has been around for years and as a result it’s the only thing we’ve felt we could really measure when it came to pitching – speed. So pitchers always worry about and focus on speed, even when they’re trying to work on spin.

When pitchers practice making balls move they usually do it by either doing their “spin” work really close to the pitcher in a half-motion kind of action and then moving back to the mound and mixing speed and spin together. In every case, whenever a pitcher tries to cram spin into speed, speed is going to win. That’s why most pitchers balls don’t really move like everyone thinks they should.

So how do you help your pitchers get through this spin speed improvement zone and still realize they’re making progress? The good news is there is a great tool to easily help your pitchers see their improvement and actually compete to try and improve – it’s called the RevFire. This device is very simple to use and quickly gives out spin rates for all pitches. It operates using a small hand held unit and a special softball that has a gyroscope inside of it that allows it to talk to the handheld and give out spin rates.

I use this device with all levels of pitchers (that have different pitches) as both a baseline to help us see where we are spin-wise so we can see how much we improve over time, but also as a competition for pitchers to try and increase their spin on the next pitch. Because this device actually gives you a spin number pitchers can immediately tell if what they tried to do to create more spin actually worked.

Start using the RevFire with your pitchers and you’ll immediately notice how they shift their focus from simply throwing the ball harder to trying to spin or twist the ball more in an effort to get a higher read out. The following numbers will give you an idea on what sort of pitchers get what kind of spin numbers. Remember that consistency is the key so the more a pitcher can create a high spin number on a particular pitch the more that pitch will consistently move.

One comment – while this does measure the amount of spin it won’t tell you the direction of the spin. That’s something your eyes must do as balls always move in the direction they spin (#1 on our 2 item list).

Once your pitchers have used the RevFire to see what amount of spin they are getting on each of their pitches, a GREAT tool to help them improve the amount of spin they’re getting is the Zip Ball! I developed this ball for this exact purpose – to help pitchers better increase the amount of spin they get on each pitch by not only doing the first half of the snap (which almost all pitcher get) but by completing the second half of the snap (which most pitchers don’t get). Because the Zip Ball is smaller than a regulation softball it allows the pitcher to focus more on the entire snap zone instead of just the first half – and, pitchers can throw them at full speed.

    The faster a ball spins in one direction, the more it will move. Simple concept that probably applies in almost all cases.

    However, have you ever seen cases of pitchers having great movement and effective pitches while their RevFire readings where below what should be expected for a pitcher of their level / caliber?

    I have witness such a case once. That was interesting – ball’s moving very well, pitches are very effective, yet her readings for ball speed are way below what would be expected (and the device is working fine because the numbers for other pitches make sense).

  2. I have been using the Revfire system since it was released to market over 3 years ago. You can see my Testamonial on the Revfire Web Site. I would like to share with you, my experience that in terms of generaging top speeds that more spin in not better. The premise that more spin creates more speed is incorrect.I have seen an increase of up to 5 mph at least 5 of my pitcher’s fastballs by decreasing their spin. Spin is energy and if that energy is channeled into spin, the result is a slower fastball. I am having remarkable success in increasing my pitchers fastball speed by decreasing their spin rates not increasing it, by concentrating on improved snapping techiques. If you would like to discuss this, I would be happy to share my experience with you.

  3. Marc – I only use the RevFire for spin readout and not for speed as that reading tends to be about 3-5 mph slower than her normal speed. The focus of the RevFire is measuring spin so I completely agree that it’s speed readings would be under what you might expect.

    George – I agree that too much spin focus on a fastball will slow down the fastball. I only mentioned fastball in my article as a comparison to the drop as both pitches spin in the same direction but since the focus is different for each (spin for the drop and speed for the fastball) that the result is obviously different. I am not suggesting to make your fastball spin more as that would certainly detract from it’s objective which is speed. Sorry if I confused you.

  4. Marc and I are equal witnesses to ball movement with less spin speed than most advocate. I attribute that phenomenon to the knuckle ball effect. If a knuckle ball is rotating (slowly) in one direction when thrown it has a tendency to move that way a lot.

  5. I also have a daughter that has very average spin rates per the Revfire but her balls moves great. We work and work on increasing her spins but I can not get them to improve and we throw four times a week for the entire year working on this. I have heard two theories regarding spin rate. One is the loose wrist snap and the other centered on the grip and the friction the fingers put on the ball. I am sure it is a combination of both, but does anyone have any ideas to help me out in order to really improve numbers in this area. My daughter has very small hands and fingers, do you think this might be a limiting factor?

  6. Hi Mark – it sounds like your daughter works hard at trying to improve her pitches, that you feel her RevFire spin numbers are lower than they should be and yet you feel her ball moves great. Sounds like you might be struggling to get more break at the end of her pitches (meaning they start to break but don’t finish breaking). I’ll be addressing this topic in my next Insider Newsletter.   7. Cindy, I was re reading the article on increasing pitch movement thru spin. In that article you mentioned to prerequisites to a ball moving. 1) the ball moves in the direction of the spin – this is guaranteed. 2)the ball moves as fast as it spins – this I have a little problem with. It has always been my position as a pitcher and a coach that in order for a ball to move, it must be spinning faster than it is moving. It is possible to throw a ball too hard because it is traveling forward faster than it is spinning. Sometimes you can get a ball to move more by taking some speed off the pitch and keep the spin the same because now the spin is faster that tne speed. It is sort of like a put in golf where a slow putt will break more than a faster putt from the same place. I have had success with this and I am interested in your opinion.
